Contributing to the Greater Good: Sustainable Practices at PAGE Meeting

Prioritizing sustainability at the PAGE Meeting 2024 in Rome by promoting local culture, using eco-friendly materials, encouraging sustainable transportation, and sourcing locally.

Monday, 15 July 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of event management, sustainability and social responsibility have become cornerstones of ethical practices. At AFEA Congress, we are proud to align with these principles as we reflect on the successful execution of the PAGE Meeting 2024 in Rome, Italy. This annual gathering of the Population Approach Group in Europe (PAGE) offered a platform for scientific exchange and collaboration in pharmacometrics, and this year, it also served as a model for how events can contribute to the greater good.

Embracing Local Culture and Cuisine
Promoting local culture and cuisine was a significant aspect of our sustainability efforts. For PAGE 2024, we sourced local pasta offering participants a taste of authentic Italian flavors. Each serving was accompanied by a description that not only highlighted the culinary delight but also tied into the thematic elements of the conference, emphasizing the importance of local sourcing and cultural appreciation. Any leftover pasta was donated to a local charity, ensuring that our event also contributed to the community's welfare.

Eco-friendly Materials and Practices
Understanding the environmental impact of events, we took several measures to minimize waste and reduce our carbon footprint. All badges provided to participants and staff were made from recyclable and recycled materials. This small yet significant step ensured that even the basic essentials of the conference were aligned with our eco-friendly ethos.
To further reduce waste, we opted not to print physical programs. Instead, all conference information was accessible via a QR code and the official PAGE conference app. This digital approach as well as further digital tools used to facilitate the congress program not only saved paper but also made the program more accessible and interactive for participants.

Sustainable Transportation
Transportation is a major contributor to the carbon footprint of any event. At PAGE 2024, we encouraged participants to use sustainable transportation options. We provided comprehensive information and suggestions for utilizing local public transport, electric taxis, and other eco-friendly vehicles. By promoting these options, we aimed to reduce the overall environmental impact of attendee travel.

Local Sourcing
In a departure from traditional event planning, where suppliers are often sourced from various locations, we made a conscious effort to source everything locally for PAGE 2024. This decision supported local businesses and reduced the carbon emissions associated with transporting goods from distant locations. By relying on local suppliers, we also fostered a stronger connection with the community and ensured that our event had a positive economic impact on the local area.

Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, AFEA Congress remains committed to integrating sustainability and social responsibility into all our events. The PAGE Meeting 2024 was not just a one-time effort but part of a broader commitment to creating events that contribute to the greater good. By continuously evaluating and improving our practices, we aim to set new standards in sustainable event management and inspire others in the industry to follow suit.

Conclusion
The PAGE Meeting 2024 in Rome stands as a testament to what can be achieved when event planning prioritizes sustainability and social responsibility. From promoting local culture and eco-friendly practices to engaging attendees in sustainability initiatives, every aspect of the event was designed with the greater good in mind. At AFEA Congress, we are proud to lead by example and demonstrate that with thoughtful planning and execution, events can indeed contribute positively to society and the environment.
By showcasing these efforts in The PCO, we hope to inspire other event planners and organizations to adopt similar practices, ultimately creating a ripple effect of positive change across the industry. Together, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and socially responsible future in event management.
